Our Work, Our Vision

We see a worldwide United Methodist Church driven to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. To live more fully into this vision, we are working toward deeper connections throughout the church, greater local authority, and more equitable sharing of power and representation around the world.

Worldwide UMC Committee Offers Key Steps for 2012 General Conference

The 2012 United Methodist General Conference is being challenged to more fully embrace the church’s expanding worldwide presence and ministry.

After seeking input around the world, the 20-member Committee to Study the Worldwide Nature of The United Methodist Church is offering a series of proposals to the April-May 2012 General Conference in Tampa, Fla.

The Committee's proposals would:
  • Incorporate a new worldwide United Methodist Church covenant into the Book of Discipline. The covenant will be accompanied by a Litany for the Covenant of The Worldwide United Methodist Church.
  • Create a new global Book of Discipline that specifies what decisions the General Conference makes, and which areas of ministry and organization are adaptable by Central Conferences.
  • Clarify how general agencies function in a worldwide rather than United States-centric church.
  • More clearly model Wesleyan Holy Conferencing in a worldwide church. This is intended to bring greater equity between church ministries outside the United States and those within the U.S.
  • Set in motion a process for annual conferences to study a proposed new model for a worldwide church. This study process may result in petitions for greater structural change at the 2016 General Conference.

Worldwide UMC Committee Offers Steps for Unity, Ministry to 2012 General Conference

The 2012 United Methodist General Conference is being challenged to more fully embrace the denomination’s expanding worldwide presence and ministry.

After seeking input around the world, an international panel has completed its proposals for the April-May 2012 General Conference in Tampa, Fla. The 20-member Committee to Study the Worldwide Nature of The United Methodist Church is offering legislation to:

Conversation, Covenant, First Steps Towards UMC’s New Worldwide Vision

The special committee named to examine the worldwide nature of The United Methodist Church wants the denomination to engage in a conversation on a new vision of worldwide ministry during the 2012 General Conference in Tampa.

The 20-member committee, named by the denomination’s Council of Bishops and Connectional Table after the 2008 General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, is proposing the 2012 General Conference adopt A Covenant for The United Methodist Church as a Worldwide Church.

Committee Examines New Structural Concept for UMC

After hearing from United Methodists around the world, a special church committee is seeking additional input on a concept for an organizational structure of the denomination.

The concepts offered by the Committee to Study the Worldwide Nature of the United Methodist Church narrow the role of the General Conference and begin shaping a new form of organization for what are now jurisdictional conferences in the United States and Central Conferences throughout the rest of the world.

Committee Proposing Slimmed Down Book of Discipline

The special committee examining the worldwide nature of The United Methodist Church wants to streamline the denomination’s Book of Discipline.

The new Discipline would focus on doctrine and law relevant to the entire denomination, a groundbreaking change from the current book, which is considered United States-centric.

Members of the Committee Studying the Worldwide Nature of The United Methodist Church devoted time in meetings around the globe on developing a Discipline that is relevant worldwide, rather than dealing with predominantly American issues.
